Lockspot Terms of Use
These terms cover the Lockspot app for iPhone, the Lockspot Pro membership, and this website, https://bthirsch613.github.io/lockspot-site/, including its support pages and the support channel on GitHub. Lockspot is made by Benjamin Hirsch, an individual developer in Highland, Utah, USA. "We", "us" and "our" mean Benjamin Hirsch. "You" means the person using the app or the site.
The short version
- Apple's Standard EULA is your license to use the app. These terms add a few points specific to Lockspot.
- Lockspot is free to download. Using it needs an account and a Lockspot Pro membership, which Apple sells and bills. The membership renews automatically until you cancel it in Settings on your iPhone.
- New subscribers get a 7-day free trial on the yearly plan. Refunds go through Apple.
- If your membership ends, your zones pause and every block lifts.
- Lockspot is a self-control tool that you can turn off at any time, so it can't guarantee that an app stays blocked.
- Zones rely on the location your iPhone reports, which isn't exact. Don't rely on Lockspot in an emergency, for safety or medical needs, or to control someone else's phone.
- The app and the site come with no warranties beyond what the law requires.
- Support questions are posted publicly, so keep personal details out of them.
This summary is only a guide. The numbered sections below are the terms.
1. Your license to the app is Apple's Standard EULA
When you get Lockspot from the App Store, your license to use it is Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the "Standard EULA"): https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/. In the Standard EULA, Benjamin Hirsch is the "Application Provider" and the "Licensor" for Lockspot.
That license can't be transferred. It lets you use Lockspot on Apple-branded products that you own or control, as allowed by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions (https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/), including through Family Sharing. That covers the app itself; Lockspot Pro memberships aren't shared (see section 4).
These terms add to the Standard EULA. They don't replace it. If anything here conflicts with the Standard EULA, or with those Usage Rules, about your license to the app, the Standard EULA and the Usage Rules win.
The Standard EULA allows an app developer to collect technical data about your device. Lockspot collects only what it needs to run your account and membership, and your location, your zones and your app picks stay on your iPhone. Our Privacy Policy explains both: https://bthirsch613.github.io/lockspot-site/privacy/
2. What Lockspot does, and what it can't promise
Lockspot helps you keep your own focus. You draw zones on a map and pick apps. While your iPhone is inside a zone, or while you hold to lock in, Lockspot asks Apple's Screen Time to block those apps. Blocking works only while you have an active Lockspot Pro membership, and a free trial counts (see section 4).
You stay in control the whole time. You can stop blocking whenever you want, and none of these needs a membership:
- end a lock-in with Hold to end;
- delete a zone;
- remove Lockspot's access in Settings > Screen Time;
- turn off location for Lockspot (zones stop working; holding to lock in still works);
- delete the app, which lifts every block.
Because you can always switch it off, and because it depends on Apple's Screen Time and location services, Lockspot doesn't guarantee that any app will be blocked at a given moment, or that it will stay blocked.
3. Your account
To use Lockspot, you need an account. You can create one with Sign in with Apple, or with your email address and a 6-digit code that we email you. There's no password.
- Use your own Apple Account or an email address you control, and keep access to it, because that's how you sign back in.
- Your account is for you only. Don't share it, sell it or let someone else use it.
- You're responsible for what happens under your account.
- You can delete your account at any time in Lockspot under Settings > Account > Delete account. Deleting it doesn't cancel your App Store subscription; section 4 explains how to cancel.
We may suspend or close an account that's used to break these terms or the law, or to attack Lockspot or the services it runs on. Our Privacy Policy explains what your account holds.
4. Membership and billing
Lockspot is free to download. To use it, you need an active Lockspot Pro membership, which you buy in the app through Apple's App Store. Apple sells and bills the membership, and your purchase is also covered by the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.
- Plans. Yearly, at US$29.99 a year, or monthly, at US$6.99 a month. These are US prices. Prices are set through the App Store and shown in your local currency, so they can be different in your country, and taxes depend on where you live. The app shows your price before you buy. Apple charges the payment method on your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase or, if you start the free trial, when the trial ends.
- Free trial. New subscribers get a 7-day free trial on the yearly plan, which the app selects for you. You can choose the monthly plan instead; it has no trial. Apple allows one Lockspot Pro trial per Apple Account, so if you've had one before, the app doesn't offer it again. If you don't cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, the yearly membership starts and Apple charges the yearly price.
- Automatic renewal. Your membership renews automatically at the end of each year or month, and Apple charges the payment method on your Apple Account, unless you turn off renewal at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Apple may charge for the renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends.
- Cancelling. You can cancel at any time. In Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions > Lockspot > Cancel Subscription, or use Manage subscription in Lockspot. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and your membership stays active until the date Apple shows there. Deleting the app or your Lockspot account doesn't cancel the subscription.
- Price changes. We may change the price of Lockspot Pro. A change never applies to a period you've already paid for. Apple tells subscribers before a price increase takes effect and, where Apple's rules or the law require it, asks you to agree to the new price. If you don't agree, your membership ends at the end of the current period.
- Refunds. Apple handles all payments and refunds, and we can't issue refunds ourselves. To ask for one, follow Apple's refund steps; Apple decides under its own policies. Cancelling doesn't refund the current period, but you keep any refund rights your local law gives you.
- Payment problems. If a renewal payment fails, Apple may keep your membership active for a short grace period while you update your payment method. If the payment still fails, the membership ends.
- Family Sharing. Lockspot Pro isn't shared through Family Sharing. Each person needs their own membership.
- When a membership ends. When your membership ends, because you cancelled, it expired, it was refunded or a payment failed, Lockspot ends any lock-in, pauses every zone and lifts every block, so nothing stays blocked. Your zones and history stay on your iPhone, and your zones switch back on if you subscribe again.
5. Location and timing limits
Zones depend on the location your iPhone reports, and Lockspot can't make that location more accurate.
- GPS can drift, especially indoors, so a block can switch on or off near the edge of a zone. Drawing the zone a little larger than the building helps. Zones have a minimum size, and they can't tell the floors of a building apart.
- With the app closed, a zone can take a few minutes to switch after you walk in or out. With the app open, it's usually quicker.
- Zones need location access set to Always, with Precise Location on. Low Power Mode, turning off Background App Refresh, restarting your iPhone, weak signal and software updates can pause or delay zones.
- Apple can change how Screen Time, location and background activity work in any software update, and that can change how Lockspot behaves.
6. What not to use Lockspot for
Lockspot isn't designed, tested or suitable for:
- emergencies, or any situation where your safety or someone else's depends on reaching an app or keeping one blocked;
- medical, mental-health or addiction treatment. Lockspot isn't a medical device and doesn't give medical advice;
- parental control, or monitoring or restricting another person's phone. Lockspot works only for the person using the phone, and that person can turn it off;
- any other safety-critical purpose, for example keeping you off your phone while driving.
Don't pick apps you might need for your safety, health, work or school. If you need a blocked app, end the lock-in or turn off Screen Time access. In an emergency, contact your local emergency services.
7. No warranty
Lockspot and this site are provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we make no promises (warranties) about them, express or implied. That includes any promise that they'll be free of errors, always available or fit for a particular purpose, or that blocking or location will be accurate. Section (e) of the Standard EULA says the same for the app.
If Lockspot fails to meet a warranty that applies by law, you may tell Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price for the app, if any. Refunds of membership charges are covered in section 4. To the maximum extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Lockspot. Any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses caused by a failure to meet a warranty are our responsibility, not Apple's.
Some places don't allow these exclusions. If you live in one of them, you keep the rights your local law gives you, and this section applies only as far as that law permits.
8. Limits on our liability
To the extent the law allows:
- we aren't liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses. That includes lost data, lost time, missed deadlines, lower grades, lost income or profits, and anything that happens because an app was or wasn't blocked;
- our total liability to you for all claims about Lockspot and this site is limited to US$50, the same cap that section (f) of the Standard EULA sets for the app.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law doesn't allow to be limited. In some countries, for example, that includes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, and liability for fraud.
9. Using the site and the support channel
You're welcome to read this site and share links to it. Support happens on GitHub at https://github.com/bthirsch613/lockspot-site/issues/new. When you post there:
- Your question is public, and GitHub's Terms of Service and Privacy Statement apply to what you post. Leave out personal details about yourself or anyone else, including addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, receipts and screenshots that show where you are.
- Be respectful. No harassment, hate, threats, spam, advertising, malware or links to it, or anything illegal.
- Don't pretend to be us or to speak for Lockspot.
- Don't try to disrupt, overload or break into this site or the services it runs on.
We may edit, hide, close, lock or delete posts that break these rules, and block accounts from the repository. We answer questions as well as we can, but we can't promise a reply, a fix or a date.
If you send us ideas or feedback, you agree that we can use them to improve Lockspot without owing you anything.
10. Lockspot's name, mascot and content
The Lockspot name, the padlock mascot, the app's design, its meme captions and study cards, and this site's text and images belong to Benjamin Hirsch. You may share screenshots of the app and the site, including your own weekly recap, as long as you don't change them to mislead anyone or suggest that we endorse you. Don't copy them to build another app or site, or use the name or mascot as your own branding.
Open-source software inside the app stays under its own licenses, and those licenses govern it.
11. Apple and other companies
- These terms are between you and Benjamin Hirsch only, not Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for Lockspot and its content.
- Apple has no obligation at all to provide maintenance or support for Lockspot. Support comes from us, as described in section 9.
- Apple sells and bills Lockspot Pro memberships and handles their refunds, as described in section 4.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims by you or anyone else relating to Lockspot or your possession or use of it. That includes product liability claims, claims that Lockspot fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
- If anyone claims that Lockspot, or your possession or use of it, infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are solely responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging that claim.
- Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms. Once you accept these terms, Apple has the right (and will be deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
- When you use Lockspot, you must also follow any third-party terms that apply to you, such as your mobile carrier's terms.
- Lockspot isn't affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Apple, or by the makers of any app you choose to block. Its meme captions joke about distracting apps in general and don't come from those apps' makers.
12. Export and sanctions
You represent and warrant that you aren't located in a country that is subject to a U.S. Government embargo, or that the U.S. Government has designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you aren't on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties. Section (g) of the Standard EULA also covers export rules.
13. Younger users
If you're under 18, or under the age of adulthood where you live, read these terms with a parent or guardian before you use Lockspot. A parent or guardian may need to approve the membership purchase, for example through Ask to Buy.
14. Ending these terms
You can stop using Lockspot at any time by deleting your account and the app. Cancel your membership in Settings as well, because deleting the app or your account doesn't stop App Store billing. Your rights under these terms end automatically if you break them. We may change, pause or stop offering Lockspot, any of its features, or this site at any time; this doesn't take away any refund rights you have from Apple or under your local law. Sections 7, 8, 9 (the feedback paragraph), 10, 11, 15 and 17 keep applying after these terms end.
15. Disputes and governing law
If something goes wrong, please tell us through support first. Most problems can be fixed that way.
Section (i) of the Standard EULA sets the governing law and the courts for your license to the app, and the same law and courts apply to these terms. If the law of the country where you live gives you the right to rely on your local law or to bring a claim in your local courts, you keep that right.
16. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when Lockspot adds features. We'll post the new version on this page with a new effective date. For significant changes, we'll also say so on the Lockspot home page or in the app's release notes. Changes don't apply to a dispute that started before they took effect. If you keep using Lockspot after a change takes effect, the updated terms apply to you. If you don't agree with them, stop using Lockspot, cancel your membership and delete the app. Price changes follow section 4.
19 October 2026, updated for memberships: added section 3 (Your account) and section 4 (Membership and billing), updated the short version and the other sections to match, and renumbered the sections after them.
17. Everything else
- If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies.
- If we don't enforce a term straight away, we haven't given up the right to enforce it later.
- You can't transfer your rights under these terms. We may transfer ours to someone who takes over Lockspot, and they must honor these terms.
- These terms, the Standard EULA and our Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Lockspot and this site. Your purchases are also covered by Apple's terms, as section 4 explains.
